Lawyers are the new priestly class. Think about it.
They're not the state, but they're essentially above the state. Think about the relationship between the Catholic Church and the state in the Middle Ages. Like lawyers, it was never the state itself. But it always had quasi state powers, or the state would have to pay deference to it and organize itself around it, making obeisance to it and paying homage to it. It was the moral authority for all of society.
Just like lawyers today - lawyers who make up our legislatures and write our laws, and then run our courts and pretend to serve justice and the common good, while telling us all what to do, literally ordering the President of the United States around.
Does anyone stand when a woman enters the room anymore? How about kiss Cardinals' rings, or kneel for kings of Presidents? No, none of that pomp and circumstance remains.
Except for courts. You must stand when they enter, and talk back to a court and they can hold you in contempt - the First Amendment doesn't apply in a court room (limited public forum, a doctrine courts (lawyers) invented).
In the medieval system, the king was supposedly in charge, but the church was the moral authority to which everybody believed was owed deference and was the source of legitimacy in society. Likewise, too, today, we're supposedly in some sort of separation of powers regime. But the lawyers, essentially through the legislature and the judiciary, both make the laws and then legitimize the laws that we live under.
It's not really a rule by the people, although we do get to vote for whoever the lawyers and the press, our modern perverted aristocracy (oligarchy actually), have to offer.
Today the moral authority is given by all of society to lawyers and courts. Brown versus Board of Education was hailed as the new divine revelation, the rules of civil procedure is the new code of court etiquette, injunctions are the new excommunication (submit or else!!) that even a President must bow to.
Supposedly judges—the judicial branch—are supposed to say what the law is, but in reality, the judicial branch commands a supposedly coequal branch, and therefore an inferior branch.
Everybody views this as legitimate through the mass indoctrination of public schools and the media, and would likely view it to be illegitimate for an executive branch official to disobey a court or what some lawyer has to say. So now, the law is only really discernible to lawyers, just as religion was the realm of priests and the church before, only really able to be judged by them.
The difference is that in the past, the laws were actually based around truth and God, unlike ours today. Today, they're based around a denial of God, and so are therefore less legitimate. Lawyers are often some of the worst people on earth.
And that's why our society is so bad - because our priestly class is evil.
