Today is the launch of The Christendom Coalition Newsletter, as well as Christendomcoalition.com. Today is a fitting day to launch, because August 25th is St. Louis IX, King of France's feast day.
Why does that matter? Because The Christendom Coalition is fundamentally a project dedicated to political power. Some might be called to be Saints in monasteries, or by adopting a Benedict Option. But the West, Christendom, is in crisis. There is too much at stake to abandon the pursuit of political power, leaving it to the enemies of Christ.
That is why we need the prayers of St. Louis IX, who shows us that one can be both a Saint and a King, a ruler of an entire nation. One can be both a Saint and go to war, as St. Louis IX did when he launched the 7th Crusade.
I chose Emperor Charles V as the Patron of The Christendom Coalition, in part because he was not a canonized Saint, to remind us of the ways in which we are sinful and fall short, and have to strive for holiness. But that doesn't mean we can't have holy Kings on our side as well - St. Louis IX, pray for us
