This is a short reflection on an error of the SSPX. We need more Orthodox Catholics in the Church, fighting for the Catholic faith. We need more Catholics supporting the inheritance of the Latin mass and fighting for Liturgical reform and tradition.
But my understanding is that it's a widely propagated view and practice among the SSPX to forbid its adherents from attending Novus Ordo masses, even when a TLM is not available. In other words, directly commanding the opposite of what the Church has commanded every Sunday. Counseling that what the Church has stated is a command of all Catholics is actually a sin, and that what the Church has stated is a sin (not attending mass) is actually not a sin.
Contradicting what the Church has commanded on pain of sin, and commanding the opposite on pain of sin, is a sin, and a grave one. In my view (for what it's worth), it seems like almost certainly a mortal one for priests and bishops. In other words, if your SSPX priest is commanding you not to attend a Novus Ordo mass, he's close to 100% headed for Hell
Again, encouraging the faithful to commit mortal sin is mortally sinful. We are commanded by Christ, through His Church, to attend mass every Sunday. If you miss mass, that's a serious sin. If you're intentionally doing it on the advice of priests or bishops contradicing the command of the Church, then you're in grave error.
That one little bit of poison is enough to poison the entire SSPX movement. Forget whether the Latin Mass should be suppressed, or can be suppressed. Forget whether the SSPX were validly excommunicated or not. Forget whether they should have bishops. Forget whether Leo XIV or Francis is or was a good or bad Pope.
That one single error means they are advising mortal sin. And the priests and bishops advising such are morally culpable for such advice, and that is the sin of schism.
If you advocate mortal sin, you do not deserve bishops - that only encourages more advocacy of mortal sin and schism.
That one error is enough to condemn the entire SSPX - and if you are in the SSPX and disagree with this error - where is the SSPX's magesterial ability and action taken to condemn this error? If the SSPX is truly a part of the Church, and represents a truer version of the Catholic Faith than that of Leo XIV, where is its ability to condemn error and discipline those propagating this pernicious advice to skip mass?
Kennedy Hall says he doesn't want our sympathy. Too bad - the SSPX does have my sympathy in a lot of ways. But for this error alone they stand condemned. Please come back - and let all those who hold to the error that Catholics should skip mass on Sunday if the only mass they can attend is a Novus Ordo mass be anathema.
